MAISIE MARY MARSHALL

Jai is 20 years old and has left college, he is now living at home with his parents Luke, Shell and his two younger brothers Huck and Woody. He is currently saving to leave Cornwall to go travelling. Jai has worked multiple jobs over the past few months to help pay for his accommodation at his parents home. He is currently working for his keep helping his family renovate a holiday let in the back garden. Which will eventually help with the household bills. 

Jai New sitting in his living room texting a friend on his phone. Jai say's "It is really hard to move out and become independent from your parents when you leave college. I didn't realise how expensive everything is, like food and general living".

Luke says that "The disparity between what people earn and the cost of living is getting bigger. Therefore you no... its really hard for Jai to get started in life. We will support him what ever he chooses to do, as long as he works and is earning some money". 

The New family sitting in their living room having a chat. Shell says that "In Cornwall there are so many holiday homes it is really expensive for a full time worker earning a good wage to even move out, let alone a young person who has just left college or university." 

Jai New sitting in his studio. Jai and his dad renovated their shed into a small studio living space for Jai to live in while he remains at home. He spent most of last winter building it so that he had somewhere to live after college. 

Age 19, Hugh left college last year and is currently working as a carpenter doing various jobs around the West Penwith area. Hugh remains at his family home with his parents Neil and Crissy and his younger sister Phoebe who is 17. While at college Hugh studied a carpentry course because he felt that he did not want to go to university. While at college he argued that the institution does not provide support and further options for those who wish to advance their practical skills instead of studying academic subjects. After he left college Hugh wanted to move in with friends and start up his life in his own place, however he learnt that it was incredibly expensive to find independence and remained at home to save money. 

Hugh sitting in his living room. Hugh says that "When you are at school they really don't prepare you for what happens when you leave education, although I suppose they never really have anyway. But at the moment it feels that they put alot of presure for us to go to university, but university is not for everyone and not everyone can afford it now as well." 

Neil reading a leaflet in his house. Neil says " I think that success is having a family around you, you don't need more than that really." 

Crissy sitting in the kitchen. Crissy says that " I think that now for them success has to be instant, you don't work really for it, you just want it here and now. Where as in the past success meant work hard. Now it is presented to you in a nice shiny packaging and they perhaps feel that it is going to be easy you no. But that is not their fault, its just the way it has become." 

"I agree with dad, I think that success is to be happy and have good friends and a family. But you no I am aware that it is really hard to get started financially and I would say that maybe it is not success that people fear to strive to but the presure to just be able to support yourself in what ever you choice to do."
